1971 late Series IIA (built up as Series III) model on restored, original chassis. Later 200Tdi turbo diesel coupled to original type 4spd manual transmission. The Series IIA is considered by many the hardiest Series model constructed, having the same main design as the original Series 1, but improved upon in many areas. It is the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and the same basic shape was carried right through to the most recent Defender, which only last year ceased production after its long 67 year life span.
This lovely sign written truck, affectionately known as ‘Edwin’ (after Edwin Foden), is your typical example of an in-period heavy duty service vehicle; the Land Rover Diesel Long Wheelbase Pickup. The previous two owners were both engineers; the first carrying out an extensive rebuild turning it into a show vehicle to go alongside his collection of classic Foden lorries. The vehicle is right on the cusp of the Series IIA/Series III production change over, we believe he chose to rebuild it as a Series III to fit in with the collection and also due to the more readily available parts. The second owner had the 200Tdi fitted in place of the original 2.25 diesel, making it more economical and useable as a workhorse when called upon. It was still seen on the show circuit, often arriving as a support vehicle behind a vintage steam roller!
Looking underneath, the chassis can be described as excellent, with only high-quality repairs visible, and has been treated with underseal to preserve its longevity. The bulkhead is also believed to be original, restored to an equally high standard. The axles and swivels all seem to be in good order, and the leaf springs have stripped, cleaned and bound to keep them supple for years to come. Back up on top, the bodywork is nice and straight with no major dents and scrapes visible. The paintwork is not new, but wears just the right amount of patina, the worst area to mention is on top of the wings where spanners etc have been put down over the years chipping off the paint. The ‘Foden Service’ signwriting has been traditionally applied rather than incorrect vinyl stickers.
The ex-Discovery 200Tdi fires up immediately from cold with a small whisp of smoke, and is very willing on the road accelerating quickly up to a happy cruising speed of around 50mph with the standard gearing. All gears select perfectly and the low range and four-wheel drive options all work as they should, the hand throttle mounted on the bulkhead is operational, and the brakes pull the vehicle up to a stop nice and straight. All these qualities make for a versatile, economical-to-run vehicle.
The interior is excellent; with a good crack-free dashboard top and bottom, three vinyl seats and a pair of new footwell mats. The battery has been relocated to the compartment under the passenger seat, which also a bottle jack and wheel brace.
Even though the vehicle is tax and MoT exempt, it will come with a fresh MoT for peace of mind. The odometer reads 71881 however we are unable to verify whether this is correct. This stunning-looking Land Rover would make a fantastic investment that can also be used, enjoyed and cherished, taken to classic vehicle shows or just used as a quirky pickup truck.
