Land Rover Series II 88” 2.25P
1961 | 3dr Hard Top | 2.25 Petrol | 4 Speed Manual | Pastel Green with Limestone Roof
Series II ‘Hard Top’ model. Original specification, 2.25l 4cyl 3 main bearing petrol engine coupled to a 4spd manual transmission. High/Low Range, selectable 4wd. 5x LWB steel wheels with 205/80R16 radial tyres. Deluxe seats, plus outer seat belts. Rubber floor mats front and rear. Comes with 12 months MoT.
The Series II is considered by many the hardiest Series model constructed, having the same main design as the original Series 1, but improved upon in many areas. It is the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and the same basic shape was carried right through to the most recent Defender, which only last year ceased production after its long 67 year life span.
This particular vehicle is a solid example of the traditional short wheel base (88”) ‘Hard Top’ model, first registered on the public highway in 1969… Previously it saw service with the Royal Air Force registered as ‘75 AA 41’. The standard ‘two and a quatre’ petrol engine starts immediately from cold settling into a steady tick over, and pulls with plenty of power on the road, cruising at 50mph easily. The brakes stop the vehicle straight as expected and the steering is in good order. All gears select correctly and the low range and four-wheel drive options all work as they should. Uphill or down dale, this Landy is capable of getting you where you need to go no matter the weather conditions.
The previous keeper, who acquired the vehicle in 1993, stripped the vehicle back to it’s chassis around 2009, and rebuilt it addressing any areas in need of attention including fitting a new cross member to a good standard, new rear tub struts, springs, lighting, and reconditioned the gearbox. The bulkhead is believed to be a Series IIA item (along with a few other parts fitted in the past, including the shallower sills), and is in good order having had new footwells/repairs. The panel work is reasonably straight with only the odd dent/crease in the front LH wing, and the paintwork is to a presentable standard.
The interior is your usual spartan, hose-out affair with three vinyl seats across the front (3-point seatbelts fitted to the outer seats) – just as it needs to be! Inside the doors and the rear wheel boxes have been lined out with plywood to help protect the panel work. All the electrics (the little that they are!) work, including the Smiths heater mounted on the bulkhead.
Even though the vehicle is tax and MoT exempt, it will come with a new MoT. The odometer reads 88,981 however we are unable to verify whether this is correct. This proper old Landy would be a great investment that you can use properly for Land-Rovery things at the same time… Putting muddy dogs in after a days shooting, taking garden waste to the tip or getting to the pub in two foot of snow! If you require additional changes i.e. a full canvas top, different wheels and tyres etc, these are things we can carry out for you, just get in touch to discuss your needs.
