Description:

The Series II is considered by many the hardiest Series model constructed, having the same main design as the original Series 1, but improved upon in many areas. It is the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and the same basic shape was carried right through to the most recent Defender, which only last year ceased production after its long 67 year life span.

This particular vehicle is a fantastic example of the traditional short wheel base (88”) ‘Regular’ model, supplied new to Charles Hurst Limited in Belfast, N.I. in ‘Basic’ trim, i.e. a full-length canvas hood. The vehicle’s registration number was issued in Londonderry in June 1961. In 1969, the vehicle came over to Aylesbury and was issued a UK logbook in July that year.

Climbing in, the rebuilt ‘two and a quarter’ petrol engine starts immediately from cold settling into a steady tick over, has plenty of power on the road cruising at sensible speeds easily, and all the transmission/low range 4wd works perfectly (which we are told has also been rebuilt). The engine was supplied by Turner Engineering in 2017, as a ‘Stripped engine, no external parts, Lead Free High Performance’ (as per the invoice in the history file). It certainly pulls well and sounds very healthy. The vehicle also steers straight with no untoward play, and the brakes pull it up strong and true.

Looking underneath, there is no corrosion issues to worry about with a good solid chassis – The rear crossmember has been replaced at some point in its life along with an outrigger but all to a very good standard. The bulkhead is also original, but has had new (correct ribbed type) footwells and repairs where required, again to an excellent standard. The panel work is all very straight, and the original paintwork has been polished up to preserve its history. The only exception to this is the rear RH wing which has been replaced professionally due to a minor crease - the paintwork here blends in nicely with the rest of the truck. At some point in its life, it has had a truck cab roof fitted however it also comes with a full set of hood sticks and fittings to change it back for ‘open air motoring’. There is a ‘bikini’ hood (covers the front part of the cab) with it, but we can source a full length canvas top for you if required.

The interior is your usual spartan, hose-out affair with three ‘Elephant Hide’ seats (originals restored) across the front – just as it needs to be! There are a pair of ‘rubber link’ floor mats in the footwells. All the electrics work including the Smiths heater mounted on the bulkhead, an additional driving lamp up front and a map light on the dashboard. Behind the seats, the original type crank and jack handles are present, along with the Shelley screw jack and tool kit under the passenger seat.

Even though the vehicle is tax and MoT exempt, it will come with a new MoT. The odometer reads 29,009 however we are unable to verify whether this is correct. It comes with a huge history folder including a ‘buff logbook’, and a BMIHT dating certificate. This old Landy would be a great investment with its past history and original ‘patina’, that you can also use properly for Land-Rovery things at the same time… Putting muddy dogs in after a day’s shooting, taking garden waste to the tip or getting to the pub in two foot of snow.
