Description:
The Land Rover ‘127’ was launched in 1987 as a third wheelbase in the lineup. It was designed with utility companies in mind, with a large load carrying capability as well as being able to transport 5 people in a crew compartment. 1990, to avoid confusion with the then new ‘Discovery’, the utility models were renamed ‘Defender’ with ‘130, ‘110’ and ‘90’ designations respectively which carried on until the end of production in 2016. In 1994, the ‘bullet proof’ 300Tdi was introduced replacing the slightly agricultural, but equally reliable 200Tdi until the all new Td5 came along in 1998.
This particular 130 is a Utility Station Wagon in ‘County’ trim, finished in Loire Blue. It is a body style that was never offered on the 130 wheelbase from factory, but could well have been to the casual observer. Apart from a few built by Foley Special Vehicles and some other custom-builders, it’s pretty unique… a truly versatile ‘all-terrain people and load carrier’. Originally leaving Solihull as the standard ‘chassis crew-cab’, it was kitted out with a Quadtech enclosed workshop body for one of the utility companies. Back in 2012, it was taken off the road due to the said rear body being rotten and falling to bits. Our professional restorer took on the vehicle for himself, stripping it down to its bare chassis but never got around to rebuilding it up until 2023.
The chassis was stripped and shot blasted, a new rear galvanised crossmember was added, and then painted. Everything that was thereon fitted to the chassis was either refurbished or new; the original drive train was all gone through and refreshed where required. It was decided to build the body in the aforementioned ‘USW’ style for day-to-day useability, offering the same qualities as a 110 but with a lot more load space (about the same as a 110 van offers) in the rear! It was treated to a professional paint job in the more modern, but stunning, Loire Blue with colour coded roof, and the interior was fitted with period ‘Techo’ cloth seats and a Wright Offroad acoustic matting set up front to aid with sound proofing.
As you would expect from a fresh restoration, everything is nice and tight (well, for a Defender…!) when out on the road. The engine fires up willingly as well as pulling well on the road. The gearbox, high and low gears, difflock and clutch all work nicely, and the brakes work very well bringing it up to a stop strongly. All road wheels are new from Nakatanenga and are shod with excellent BF Goodrich A/T KO2 tyres including a matching spare.
Underneath, the vehicle is spotless… after the refurbishment, Dinitrol 4941 underseal was applied, then a coating of Fluid Film, to keep it in excellent condition for decades to come. The bulkhead and footwells are excellent, and the engine-bay side of the bulkhead coated with tinted Raptor truck bed liner for durability and slight sound proofing. The body work is stunning, with barely a mark on it – There is a small scratch on the RH rear door by the top hinge caused during the build-process – This will be touched in prior to sale. All new door hinges have been fitted too meaning the doors shut well! A swing-away rear spare wheel carrier has been added to take the weight off the rear door, helping eliminate rattles.
The interior is also excellent, the Techno cloth on all seats is in great shape and rubber matting is throughout the vehicle like any proper Defender should have! The load bay was treated to colour-coded Raptor bed liner prior to the rubber lining being added, which adds extra durability and sound-deadening. All the gauges and electrical items work, including a variable fan speed control fitted to the original dash-switch. A more modern head unit has been fitted which has a DAB receiver and FM/USB functions. A bottle jack and wheel brace are included, stowed away under the passenger seat.
The vehicle holds a valid MoT until 8th April next year, and the odometer currently reads 167,606 miles, which we believe to be correct from the vehicle’s history/documentation but cannot guarantee… Not that this milage really matters now!
This stunning 130 really is as close as you will get to a brand new 300Tdi 130. It is ready to be used and enjoyed, or if so inclined, put to work as an alternative to a modern-day pickup if you’re fed up with today’s electronics and poor build-quality! It would also make a fantastic, spacious expedition vehicle. If there are any changes/additions you would also like adding to it, then we can help. The vehicle is also now US Exportable, so if you’re looking to import a 130 stateside, then this could be the one for you!
