Description:
The Rover P5B Coupé followed on from the earlier 3-litre P5, and was produced between 1967 and 1973. The Coupé model is distinguished from the saloon by its lowered roofline and slender B-pillars—making it one of the world’s earliest true four‑door coupes. Under the bonnet it features a light-alloy 3.5‑litre V8 (derived from Buick, hence the B in ‘P5B’), delivering around 160 bhp and 210 lb·ft, paired exclusively with a 3‑speed automatic transmission and sophisticated Hydrosteer power-assisted steering. It could sprint 0–60 mph in roughly 12 seconds and cruise past 110 mph, all while managing around 20 mpg. Its interior was richly appointed with leather, wood trim, and deep carpets, the kind of refined ‘club lounge’ ambiance beloved by dignitaries. Indeed, the P5B Coupé served as transport for British Prime Ministers and even the Queen, combining stately presence with smooth V8 muscle. With only about 9,099 Coupés built, it remains a rare and cherished classic, praised for its understated elegance, robust build, and pioneering design in the coupe-sedan segment.
This particular Coupé was first registered on 10th October 1972 in London. The current owner has had it in his possession since May 1987, and after 38 years of ownership has now decided to let it go onto its next custodian. He carried out a full restoration in the 1990s, which included extensive structural refabrication and repair work, an overhaul on all mechanical components plus a replacement Borg Warner transmission and an original spec. 10.5:1 engine. The car was given a full bare-metal respray, all chrome trim re-plated and the interior was professionally retrimmed. Previously a show winning car with the Rover P5 Owners Club and numerous others, 30 years on the restoration work has mellowed into patina.
Externally, the car is in still in very good shape, although previous to being stored with us for the last 5+ years, it was kept in unfavourable conditions so the paintwork has suffered with some crazing, some pitting on bits of the chrome work and areas of the rubber window trims have some splitting. But overall, it is very presentable and would still look great at classic car shows along with being a very useable example! Underneath is very solid indeed with no rot present or repair work needed, and it hasn’t been undersealed recently hence isn’t hiding any ‘nasties’, but we’d recommend you carry this out in the future to protect it from corrosion.
Inside, the interior is in good order retaining all the correct trim and gauges. The leather seats have the odd split in on the backrests due to aging, but are still a comfortable place to be. All the electrics and dash work correctly, although the speedometer needle can be a little erratic. The are speakers, wiring and a DIN housing fitted behind the drop-down panel in the dash for a DAB radio head unit, but there isn’t one currently fitted – It just requires you to plug in one of your choosing.
Having been recently brought out of long-term storage with us, the car has received some professional recommissioning work which included a long list of new parts and fixes including fuel system, wiring and ignition issues and a reconditioned radiator. Since then, it has done plenty of test miles, and flew through an MoT with no advisories. It fires easily from hot or cold and pulls very well out on the open road with that great V8 burble. The three speeder auto box selects gears as it should, the power steering feels nice and direct and the servo-assisted brakes bring it up to a stop strong and straight.
The car has an MoT until next January (although MoT and tax exempt) and the odometer reads 27966 miles however we cannot verify this to be correct. Please do get in touch if you wish to know more or to arrange a viewing!
